The Great Snortle Hunt

Claire Freedman is well known for her popular series which all began with the infamous Aliens Love Underpants. The Great Snortle Hunt is some what of a departure from that style. Freedman has harnessed her command of the language and her knowledge of what works for children, and headed off in a very appealing new direction.

Three friends have heard the rumours about that very scary looking house, high on the hill. Nobody has seen it, but everybody knows, a Snortle lives there. Mouse, Cat and Dog set out to find out for themselves ... they pack all the essentials, including cake!

Freedman's narrative adds a dimension not frequently discovered in young children's picture book - tension. She carefully crafts an increasing level of anticipation with each turn of the page as the characters get closer and closer to the much maligned Snortle.

'For the growls and the groans,

and strange gurgly moans,'

Freedman's rhyme, and descriptive language, leaves the little ones hanging on her words ... and the ending leaves them giggling

Gorgeously crafted illustrations from Kate Hindley give this picture book an added edge - stylish, cute and full of character. The warm palette of orange, greens and blues spreads delicately across each page making use of every available space, some illustrations even making you turn the book to get an even better glimpse at the goings on.
