I fell in love with Joel's blog quite some time ago, pre My Book Corner. The inspired ideas, creativity, amazing pictures and the FUN captured my attention even though I am a little bit challenged in the craft skills department. Ultimately Joel's ideas work - after all he has created them with his own children.
Made To Play! is exactly what you need for a present with a difference - something which is modern, quirky and sure to be used over and over.
Joel "has devoted himself to making arts and crafts both accessible and meaningful" and "encourages everyone, regardless of economic means, skill level or age to participate in the collective, creative process." The culmination of his efforts, enthusiasm and enjoyment have come together in this stunning creative book.
Just the pure asthetics of this book are gorgeous - plain white with minimalist modern photographs to accompany each activity. Hand drawn illustrations neatly accompany the instructions which are clear, detailed and designed to inspire confidence. May be that is a personal thing ... I need confidence when it comes to crafting!
Divided in to categories such as Play House!, Play Music! and Play With Art!, each activity is designed to inspire imaginative play, and can be adapted to suit your (well, we do mean your child's?) interests! This would serve very well as a teacher's resource for some really engaging projects.
My Book Corner loved the quirky wooden spool birds - so much so we road tested them - my kids loved them, and I gave myself as well deserved pat on the back ;-) The sewn trumpet "asks to be picked up" and the wooden bead drum "makes a satisfying percussion sound yet maintains a reasonable decibel level. Nice!" You can tell he's a parent!
The activities vary on a skills level from simple drawing and cutting out, to making wooden blocks plus sewing activities. However I think it is this variety which represents Made To Play's beauty and ultimately helps it achieve its aim - to inspire!
