The Very Hungry Caterpillar

"pop" the little caterpillar hatches from his egg and goes on the search for something to fill his tummy.

"on Monday he ate" ... and so it goes through the days of the week, counting the food, (educational: check!), until he gets to the end of the week and goes for a mammoth feast!  My children love listing the food along with me "one slice of salami ... "

The little holes in each piece of food make this ideal as an interactive story for little ones ... and if they are quite eager, then yes, the board book version may just last a little bit longer!

My favourite page ... when you turn over to reveal he has emerged as a beautiful butterfly, ( sorry, should I have added a spoiler alert?!).

This was one of the first books I read to my children when they were really very young, Eric Carle's books are good for that.  Simple. Fun.

Happy birthday, sir. Your work isirnped me a long time ago and it is part of what is helping me to make my own dream come true. I'm starting art workshops in my home for adults--not to rediscover their inner child, but quite simply to be a kid and make a mess without some silly inner censor saying "THAT TREE IS PURPLE. Trees are NOT purple." Or "your butterfly looks like a toad." I visit the museum when I am afraid my life's run off its tracks, and I wind up looking out over the hills or simply reading six of your books in a row. THEN my life seems just fine. thank you for your joy, your silliness, your work, and your ability to inject us all with a sense of pure happiness. I can never be Eric Carle in my own art. What I CAN be is myself and bring whatever quirky happiness I can onto my own canvas. Stay with us, sir, a long time longer, if you can.

I loved loved LOVED this book when I was at school back in the early 80's, and I have been buying this book for every child I know because I think they should have the chance to love this book also!

A classic that belongs on a bookshelf in every home

Well, I remember this book as a child myself! It continues to bring joy to my children now. As the caterpillar goes on his journey it is beautiful and brightly illustrated too. This is one of those classics that will never lose its charm
