I love Penguin and his antics. I also adore Autumn.
Salina Yoon has combined both in her latest picture book, Penguin and Pumpkin, I'm hooked.
What is autumn? What does it look like? Penguin and his friends only know the white, ice filled landscape they call home. Time for an adventure. There's just one problem, young Pumpkin is just too little to take part.
The intrepid explorers, minus a very sad Pumpkin, float off atop a broken piece of ice. Here Salina's illustrations come to the forefront, developing each little penguin with their own distinct personality. Of course, my favourite is the cute book loving penguin!
The penguins discover a wonderful farm, resplendent with pumpkins in all shapes and sizes. I love how each penguin discovers a pumpkin that fits them just perfectly.
When they return to their home they do, of course, have a surprise up their sleeves for pumpkin. A surprise which captures the colours and joy of autumn. Those wonderful, leave filled endpapers will give you the biggest clue re Pumpkin's surprise.
All in all, Penguin and Pumpkin culminates in warm and delightful ending. This is a gorgeous picture book for littlies which captures the essence and tone of autumn. Beautiful.
